DETAILS
The use of an enterprise-class geodatabase provides a robust operational platform for supporting complex, production-intensive workflows. The ArcSDE geodatabase allows multiple users to work on the same data layer at the same time, greatly facilitating production. Dewberry also employs versioning as part of our workflow to manage user edits and enforce quality.
Multi-user editing
Typical DFIRM projects demand that multi-disciplinary staff members be able to simultaneously create, edit, and review data for the same data layer at the same time. Dewberry accomplishes this through ArcSDE’s multi-user environment. For example, we can have multiple users creating automated Zone A flood polygons (S_FLD_HAZ_AR). Dewberry can have additional users reviewing and commenting on the same data layer at the same time, using an all-digital, integrated QC system. Comments are added by viewers and immediately seen by project members. This multi-user capability means we can use the same workflows to accomplish tasks for both large and small projects, resulting in greater efficiency and quality.
Versioning
One of the critical requirements of a multi-user editing environment is that edits must be reconciled in a controlled manner that enforces quality. ArcSDE allows for the creation of "versions," or copies of the database that can be partitioned from the master (parent) database so that they can be independently edited. We create user-specific versions for our GeoFIRM engineers and geographers so they can create edits that are then approved before reconciliation with the protected master database. Only key GeoFIRM 'power users' have permission to reconcile data edits to the master. This methodology both manages a multi-user workflow and ensures quality.
