In its recent publication of the 100 Best Innovations of 2009, Popular Science has picked the intersection of Interstate 44 and Route 13 in Springfield, Missouri, as a best engineering innovation. The Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) is reportedly the first of its kind in the United States. The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) developed the design documents and supervised the construction of the interchange based on a DDI concept first introduced in 2001 by Gilbert Chlewicki, PE, a transportation engineer in Dewberry's Baltimore office.
