MADE began in 2002 like a bold youthful design/build company located in Brooklyn’s Red-colored Hook neighborhood. Founded by three buddies in the Yale School of Architecture—Ben Bischoff, Oliver Freundlich, and John Papa—the firm leased space inside a converted warehouse and fabricated its very own millwork. “In the first stages, it had been very hands-on and guerrilla-style, ” Bischoff states.
Whole-house makeovers now from the most of MADE’s commissions, instead of its initial more compact projects. The firm still designs and develops its work, however the “build” aspect is much more of the supervisory and management role. “We very rapidly recognized our restrictions as Sheetrockers, ” Bischoff describes. “We’re joining up with a lot more skilled trades.”
Bischoff presently leads the nine-person company, as Freundlich and Papa departed in August 2011. MADE has broadened its original Red-colored Hook studio space, changing its production shop right into a laboratory for testing ideas. Custom residential work remains a principal focus. “We discover the type of attitude and approach we've is well-suitable for someone’s home, ” Bischoff states. “It’s a really intensive participation ... how people are likely to live and inhabit the area is essential to all of us.Inches The organization is creating its first all-new residential buildings—a pool house and guesthouse in Westchester County, N.Y., along with a house in Red-colored Hook—as along with its first large-scale commercial project.
